HP was proud to be the Presenting Sponsor at the Los Angeles premier of ‘An Inconvenient Truth’ last month. The documentary chronicles the stark effects of greenhouse gases on the earth’s climate and features former US Vice President Al Gore presenting the evidence and threats of global warming.

The film was launched at the Directors’ Guild of America Theatre in Los Angeles and was supported by environmentally-conscious celebrities such as David Duchovny, Sharon Stone and Daryl Hannah. Directed by Emmy award winner David Guggenheim, the acclaimed documentary shows rapidly melting glaciers, more frequent and intense storms and countless species displaced from their natural habitats. It urges us all to take action before it’s too late.

Currently showing across America, ‘An Inconvenient Truth’ was also presented out of competition at the Cannes Film Festival in May and will be released throughout Europe later this summer.

Leader among experts

As Presenting Sponsor, HP demonstrated our leadership amongst influential organisations and experts dedicated to environmental causes. HP provided Energy Star-certified plasma screens in the theatre lobby displaying environmental messages. PCs were also set up for guests to calculate their ‘carbon footprint’, which determines approximately how many pounds of CO2 they release into the atmosphere each year. HP’s sponsorship of the film provides a natural connection with the film’s messages. It also demonstrates our continued commitment to helping our customers make environmentally responsible choices, while continually working to reduce our own impact as a company on the planet.

Reducing HP’s own carbon footprint

HP has long been considered a leader in environmental stewardship.  As a company, we have taken great strides towards reducing our own carbon footprint, from designing products with the environment in mind to adapting our operating facilities to become more environmentally friendly. Here are some examples:

HP integrates energy-saving features into its products and services as part of our ‘Design for the Environment’ programme. In fact, HP was one of the original partners in the ‘Energy Star’ programme, and we currently market approximately 1,000 products that are Energy Star qualified.

HP’s focus on reducing environmental impacts most recently led to the development of our teleconferencing technology, Halo, which reduced the amount of travel in our Imaging and Printing business by 8% last year alone, eliminating 350 tons of CO2.  HP has invented an enterprise technology called ‘Smart Cooling’, which dramatically reduces energy use (and associated cost) by 25% in data centres.

In 2005, HP implemented efficiency projects that saved more than 43 million kWh of electricity. HP also participates in the EPA’s Perfluorocarbon (PFC) Reduction Climate Partnership, a voluntary initiative to reduce PFC emissions by 10% from 1995 levels by the end of 2010. Our goal is to achieve these reductions by 2006.

At HP, we continuously look for ways to improve the environmental efficiency of our operations. We consistently measure greenhouse gas emissions caused by our combustion of fossil fuels and consumption of electricity. Our goals for 2006 include energy audits and efficiency projects at 53 of our largest facilities and the reduction of our on-site greenhouse gas emissions by 18%.

We manage our global supply chain to optimise environmental performance. We use shipping that has a lower environmental impact, such as ocean and ground transportation in place of air freight wherever possible.

Recycling

HP is proud to be an industry leader in product end-of-life management. Since 1987, we have recycled more than 750 million pounds of products and supplies and we are close to our goal of recycling 1 billion pounds by 2007.

We also work with recycling companies throughout the world to ensure that products returned to HP are processed in the region where they are collected and we offer return and recycling programs in more than 40 countries.
