Balancing HP's increasing role as a global citizen

Welcome to the first issue of our new bulletin, bringing you news and views about HP's global citizenship work in Europe, the Middle East and Africa (EMEA).

HP Global Citizenship Bulletin is for anyone with an interest in how multi-national companies can make a positive contribution to the world, something we have always aimed to do. As the world's second largest IT company - employing 43,000 people across our EMEA region - we recognise our responsibility to use our economic resources and unique assets as a force for good.

Today, this responsibility is more real than ever. The relationship between the public, government and business is changing. Many more companies are seeking to use their influence responsibly and to the benefit of society, through corporate social responsibility (CSR). Governments are doing more to recognise the contribution business can make to building strong, healthy and active social communities.

Is your personal information being collected and sold for profit by companies without your knowledge or permission?

HP introduces free recycling across the EU
HP has announced a free recycling service for commercial and enterprise customers in the European Union.

Business customers can now return IT hardware to designated collection points for HP to dispose of it, in line with the EU's new WEEE Directive.

WEEE - or Waste Electrical and Electronic Equipment - is the EU's response to the growing problem of e-waste. Its remit covers everything from PCs to power tools, to digital cameras and washing machines. It means manufacturers must finance the recycling of equipment when it reaches the end of its life.

The directive came into force in August and is being introduced in all 25 EU countries over the coming months.

HP has awarded grants worth more than 50,000 Euros each to six universities to help integrate new mobile technology into their campuses.

Technology for Teaching grants are given each year to those universities proposing the most creative and innovative use of mobile technology.

Universities across EMEA were invited to submit their proposals to HP, explaining their plans for using mobile technologies, such as wireless PCs and digital projectors, for teaching and learning.
