Long-term investment in environment and working with partners produces results

Welcome to the Summer issue of our Global Citizenship Bulletin here in Europe, Middle East and Africa (EMEA).

We have worked with Junior Achievement Young Enterprise over many years, but in the last three years, the relationship with JA-YE here in Europe has really taken us to a new level of cooperation. In this issue, you can read about some fantastic sustainable student business concepts that were presented at our awards ceremony for the HP Responsible Business Award in Berlin on 28 July.

Taking action for the environment –
celebrating Environment Day across Europe

At HP, we have celebrated Environment Days in our US offices for many years and introduced them to Europe with incredible success last year. Environment Days are an opportunity for our employees to come out in force to show their support for particular environmental issues, recycle their electronic equipment, and participate in one of the many activities that are organised throughout HP offices in the EMEA region during June-October.

Delivering business skills to young people across Europe 
A few weeks ago, HP and Junior Achievement Young Enterprise (JA-YE) presented the second HP Responsible Business Awards to the student company with the best responsible business plan. The award forms part of the education initiatives HP and JA-YE run in partnership in Europe.

In this interview with JA-YE CEO Caroline Jenner, we take a look at how collaboration between HP and JA-YE has evolved over the years and how their European-wide collaboration has delivered greater impact for HP and JA-YE.

HP meets its recycling goal six months ahead of schedule 
HP has met its goal of recycling 455 million kilograms worth of electronic equipment six months early, after initially setting the target for the end of 2007. As a result, a new target has now been set, which is to recycle the same amount, 455 million kilograms of equipment by the end of 2010, doubling HP’s annual recovery rate.

HP Responsible Business Award recognises young entrepreneurs
On 28 July, HP and Junior Achievement Young Enterprise (JA-YE) Europe awarded DIFFID from Slovakia with the Responsible Business Award. DIFFID was selected for its comprehensive approach to social and environmental responsibility from among a group of finalists. Victoria Zotova from Bulgaria was the winner of the online ideas competition for new business ideas that combined an innovative business concept with responsible business principles.

HP one of the founding members to launch Climate Savers Computing Initiative
HP was one of over 30 organisations to join the WWF to launch the Climate Savers Computing Initiative in June. The initiative unites major IT industry players in a pledge to drastically reduce the energy usage of desktop PCs, monitors and other peripherals through energy saving product design and the promotion of power-saving features already available to users today.
