Disposing of old IT equipment has long caused companies hassle and headache. As companies replace their data centres and consolidate their IT infrastructure, the volume of obsolete IT equipment increases. Responding to this trend, HP offers its customers in Europe a convenient way to go green by taking advantage of HP’s take-back and recycling service. HP Financial Services has also offered the option to buy or lease refurbished IT equipment at competitive prices for a number of years, with increasing success.

Leading offer from HP
HP carries out the essential processing and refurbishment of the equipment inhouse, with only the final dismantling for recycling or disposal of parts being carried out by trusted HP partners. Few other IT vendors offer such a comprehensive inhouse service in Europe.
The cost of the service is often reduced as HP is able to pass on to its customers any revenue generated from the sale of refurbished products, individual spare parts, or the composite materials of the equipment.

Safe handling of data records
The service includes pick-up and secure shipment of IT equipment to one of HP's processing centres, where data is over-written according to national and EU legislation. In the event of a hard drive being found to be unreadable, it will be degaussed before being drilled and shredded to minimise the possibility of data recovery. The equipment is then further disassembled into its composite parts and sent to a local partner for refurbishment, recycling or final disposal.
“The most important aspect for our customers is the assurance that HP will manage disposition of their equipment in accordance with the law, whilst at same time maximizing the resale value of the product,” said Stephen Caldwell, Managing Director, Technology Value Solutions, HP Financial Services, EMEA.
“The fact that we arrange the collection of the equipment and then process the equipment before data wiping ourselves, without any third party involvement, offers reassurance for our customers,” he added. Benefiting from HP's market presence, the service is available in many markets in Europe. Two processing centres, based in Nijmegen, Netherlands and in Herrenberg, Germany, service the region. |

Data centre equipment contributes to volume
The two centres now process over 350,000 units of equipment a year, with 60 percent of the overall volume coming from data centres. However, the centres handle the full range of IT equipment, including peripherals such as printers, monitors, desktop PCs and laptops. Globally, one million units of equipment were processed by HP last year.
“This reflects what's going on in businesses across Europe,” said Caldwell. “In most industries the IT infrastructure now enables crucial business processes and companies are consolidating their data centres to gain a competitive advantage.”
The increase in demand for HP's Asset Recovery Services is also linked to a greater awareness of the risks of data theft, and the need to comply with tighter environmental legislation. By going through HP, customers are assured that disposition of their equipment is managed in accordance with EU and national legislation. Customers who do not want to manage their own IT infrastructure can also rent or lease IT equipment through HP, which means the management, maintenance, upgrade and safe disposal of the equipment is carried out by HP as part of the agreement. |

Leasing Leasing IT equipment from HP is an easy way to keep absolute visibility and control of IT-related costs over the life-cycle of the equipment. HP is responsible for upgrades, maintenance and repairs and manages disposition of the equipment.
Short Term Rental Programme The Short Term Rental Programme allows customer to rent HP enterprise products from 3 to 18 months. This allows customers to proof test new technologies, try before they buy or rent temporary processing power or storage space during datacenter moves.
HP Certified Pre-owned Programme Purchasing or renting pre-owned HP equipment allows customers to adjust their IT infrastructure to changing needs without the price tag associated with a total refurbishment.
Global Asset Recovery Service As part of the Asset Recovery Service, three options are available:
|
- Revenue share
This option is for customers who have IT equipment that no longer matches their needs but still has resale value. HP takes the equipment away and evaluates its resale value and potential for refurbishment. The returns from the sale are split between the customer and HP according to an agreed price.
- Fixed pricing
A fixed pricing deal is for those customers with surplus IT equipment who can provide an accurate account of the number of units, details of models, technical specifications and functionality of the equipment. Based on this information, HP can quote a fixed price at which it will buy equipment from customers.
- Disposition
For customers with obsolete IT equipment, HP offers to manage disposition of the equipment safely for a small fee. HP accepts equipment from all manufacturers and will dismantle equipment into recyclable components, deleting data according to international and national data security legislation. Customers receive a certificate from HP confirming that equipment has been destroyed and disposed of.
