The aim of the HP Technology for Teaching Higher Education grant programme is to enhance the quality of teaching and facilitate students’ learning experience, deploying mobile technology in learning environments in a successful, innovative way.

On October 10th, 23 current and previous recipients of the HP’s Technology for Teaching grant from 16 countries in Europe, the Middle East and Africa (EMEA) gathered at Imperial College in London for the first EMEA Higher Education Forum. The grant recipients came from 16 countries ranging from Ethiopia to Russia. Since the inception of the grant scheme in 2003, an annual worldwide conference has been part of the one-year programme for grant recipients, but this is the first year a dedicated conference took place in Europe.

HP aims to give participating organisations an opportunity to compare progress and recent insights and build relationships with existing and previous grantees on their most innovative education solutions.

“We encourage all grant recipients to join this community to share best practices and benefit from each other’s experience. We facilitate this process by hosting face-to-face conferences with grant recipients and education experts, like the event in London and the upcoming worldwide conference we are hosting in February 2008. We also support our worldwide community of grant recipients through online webinars, a private community wiki, and my blog,” said Jim Vanides, HP’s worldwide programme manager for the HP Technology for Teaching higher education grant initiative.

The programme included speakers from teaching and higher education, such as the University of Wolverhampton, eSkills UK, as well as speakers from the European Academy of Business in the Society (EABIS) and HP.

Link between higher education and competitiveness

A panel led by Gabi Zedlmayer, VP Corporate Marketing HP EMEA, discussed the contribution of higher education to the competitiveness of Europe as a region. The debate also looked at the contribution companies like HP can make to innovation in higher education.

Panelists highlighted the role collaboration amongst universities played in rolling out new approaches to teaching and research quickly and effectively. Speakers also raised the importance of education for economic growth, both in mature and emerging markets.

Participants highlight value of network

Feedback from participants demonstrated that the conference was particularly useful for networking and learning more about innovative technologies. In addition, participants appreciated an opportunity to see solution demonstrations involving HP Tablet PCs and participating in the programme of discussions and presentations.

About HP Technology for Teaching

The HP Technology for Teaching Grant Initiative supports innovative and effective uses of technology in the classroom setting for both schools and universities. The grants aim to promote student interest in science, technology, engineering and mathematics.

Launched in 2003, the HP Technology for Teaching Grant initiative has supported K-12 teachers and lecturers in Higher Education around the world. There are now over 250 campuses in 36 countries where HP technology is helping universities to transform learning and teaching. The initiative is creating new models of success on campus for integrating mobile technology into learning environments. Through this educational programme, HP helps to improve teacher and student learning experiences through the innovative application of mobile technologies.

Technology for Teaching Grants provide selected universities with mobile technology to redesign courses and improve student-teacher interaction. The grants, valued at around €58,000 per university, consist of cash and equipment such as classroom sets of HP Tablet PCs, printers and cameras. Each grant-supported project runs for up to two academic years, after which the universities continue to use the equipment they have received.

Over the past three years, HP has donated Technology for Teaching grants to more than 30 universities in the EMEA region.
