Last month HP released its 2008 Global Citizenship Report, which reveals the highlights of our corporate social responsibility policies, programmes, performance and goals. In addition to the full online version, we have created a customer report for Europe, the Middle East and Africa as well as translated versions for select markets. This is the eighth consecutive year that we have reported on our global citizenship performance and it greatly reflects our ongoing commitment to transparency.

Whilst looking back and summarising our Global Citizenship initiatives and key achievements is important, it is also important to build on the investments from the past and grow them further to ensure a most sustainable approach. Here a few examples….:

• This month, we announced the HP Innovation in Education Grant Initiative which awards 50 grants to secondary schools and universities. Our interview for this edition is with Daniela Opp, Manager, Global Social Investments, HP EMEA. Daniela explains the background to the initiative and provides details on plans for further development.

• We announced the extension of our GET-IT programme to an additional 30 centres in Europe, the Middle East and Africa. Our Country Spotlight this month looks at how three non-government organisations in Africa have developed the programme and the benefits that their communities have received as a result.

• We are scaling up our initiative to foster ‘Brain Drain’ in Africa, which was featured in an interview with Arnaud Pierson, Strategic Universities Research Collaboration Programme Manager in the last edition of Global Citizenship Bulletin.

The fourth initiative to be extended is our partnership with Junior Achievement-Young Enterprise (JA-YE). This year HP and JA-YE have extended the HP Responsible Business competitionNon-HP site to include countries in the Middle East and Africa. The competition has been run successfully in Europe for three years and the inclusion of countries such as Egypt, Kenya, Nigeria and South Africa will bring the total number of countries to 14.

This edition of Global Citizenship Bulletin also brings two news items. The first is news of HP’s participation at a meeting held in Dublin last month on Privacy Governance and Accountability. The second is news of a report recently released by the World Wildlife Fund (WWF) and sponsored by HP that reveals how IT solutions, such as HP’s Halo System, can significantly help to reduce CO2 emissions and provide additional business benefits at the same time.

Finally, our feature for this edition focuses on a new HP-sponsored ‘Green IT Guide for Dummies’, which was launched in Brussels in March. The guide gives companies simple and straight forward ideas on how to reduce the environmental impact of their IT systems.

We hope you enjoy reading this edition of Global Citizenship Bulletin. Please feel free to provide us with your comments or, alternatively, you can post your thoughts on our blog.
