Welcome to the Summer edition of our Global Citizenship Bulletin in EMEA

This summer the 2009 UNESCO World Conference on Higher Education took place in Paris. The conference, which attracted about 1,000 delegates from 148 countries, called for higher education to address global development challenges and included high profile representatives, such as the Prime Minster of Nambia, the President of Slovenia and the wife of US Vice President Joe Biden.

The speakers were similarly high profile and included Koichior Matsuura, Director General UNESCO and Michael Mendenhall, Senior Vice President and Chief Marketing Officer HP. Michael’s presentation demonstrated how the role of innovation in higher education can push the boundaries to create opportunities for greater communication and collaboration on a global scale.

Interview

Barbara Kreissler talks about the effective partnership between UNIDO and HP on HP’s GET-IT training programme in Africa and the Middle East.

In 2008 HP established a partnership with the United Nations Industrial Development OrganisationNon-HP site (UNIDO) to provide Graduate Entrepreneurship Training through ITNon-HP site (GET-IT) in Africa. GET-IT training provides under - and unemployed people aged 16-25 with a combination of entrepreneurship skills and practical, hands-on experience in the use of IT.

As a Project Manager at UNIDO Barbara Kreissler is responsible for implementing the GET-IT programme with HP in Africa and the Middle East. In a recent podcast, she spoke of the current high levels of youth unemployment in Africa and the Middle East and of how the GET-IT training equips young people with the basic IT and business skills required to start and run their own business.

HP’s ‘Power to Change energy’ saving campaign gains momentum

HP’s ‘Power to Change’ campaign, which was launched just in June and which encourages users to turn off computers when they’re not in use, is really gaining momentum. To date, more than 18,600 people have joined the campaign by downloading a desktop widget, which tracks the cumulative energy savings relating to PCs when they are switched off at the end of the day.

HP and JA-YE announce winners of HP Responsible Business Competition

HP and Junior Achievement Young Enterprise (JA-YE) announced the winners of the 2009 HP Responsible Business CompetitionNon-HP site in July. The competition is divided into two categories: the HP Responsible Business Ideas Contest, which was won by a team from Germany and the HP Responsible Business Award, which was won by a team from Lithuania.

Country spotlight

HP Israel helps local communities with successful ‘Doing Well Day’

HP Israel teamed up with the non-governmental organisation MATAN at the beginning of June to hold a special ‘Doing Well Day’. The aim of the day was to serve local communities by offering help and assistance in a variety of ways. More than 300 employees came together to take part in different, charitable activities and the day was pronounced a resounding success.
