2006 Global Citizenship Report online

Our Global Citizenship Report is not something we put together each year, publish and then set aside to continue with other things. Global Citizenship maintains a high profile for us throughout the year and our annual reports highlight the most significant achievements.

We published our first Corporate Social and Environmental Responsibility report in 2002. Since then, Global Citizenship and Corporate Social Responsibility (CSR) has developed in many ways. Rather than being an isolated function within organisations, responsible for dealing with risks of non-compliance or damage limitation, it is increasingly considered an integral part of core business values and strategy.

HP employees show the way
Global Citizenship encompasses a wide variety of areas, from promoting education and recycling hardware to protecting human rights. For any organisation, however, the impact of global citizenship should not just focus on the external environment but also on the internal environment – our employees. That’s why, at HP, we encourage our employees to make a positive contribution in the communities in which they live and work. Read more to find out what our employees have been doing across Europe, the Middle East and Africa to go above and beyond the call of duty.

University awards address the future of teaching
In January we began the nomination and selection process for this year’s Mobile Technology for Teaching Awards with leading universities in EMEA. The higher education  programme was created by HP in 2003 and offers universities HP equipment enabling a wireless IT environment to promote the innovative use of technology in education. Up to 12 selected universities in EMEA can expect to receive US$ 70,000 worth of equipment this year.

In February, HP hosted a meeting for the recipients of last year’s awards in Monterey, California. The aim of the meeting was to allow participants to network and exchange ideas. It also offered an opportunity for the award winners to provide an update about how far they had progressed with integrating the new equipment into teaching and research.

Julie Grady, HP’s University Relations Programme Manager EMEA, attended the meeting and we caught up with her after her return to find out what participants had to say about the grant programme and to get insight into progress made so far.

Promoting technology for education in Africa
HP has signalled its continued commitment to education in Africa with the opening of the continent’s second NEPAD e-school project in South Africa.

E-schools are being introduced across the continent to help pupils learn new IT skills and to improve the standard of education delivered. Through the programme, the New Partnership for Africa’s Development (NEPAD), aims to convert all African high schools into NEPAD e-schools by 2010 and all African primary schools by 2015.
