Doing the right thing – across the borders

There are many ways to describe Corporate Social Responsibility (CSR), but it can be summarised in four short words: doing the right thing.

CSR is becoming a major influence across the world. While many companies have a long tradition in philanthropy, workers’ welfare and community involvement, CSR has become more formalised in the last 20 years. Becoming topical in the USA in the 1980s, a new CSR debate took hold in Europe in the 1990s and there is now an increasing number of institutions, the European Commission included, all dedicated to developing CSR in Europe.

CSR is high on Europe’s agenda. At HP EMEA, we believe we’re doing the right thing and our initiatives are clear examples of how HP plays an important role in contributing to Europe’s sustainable development across the borders.

HP presents ‘eco’ credentials at European Business Summit

At the fourth European Business Summit in Brussels in March, HP took the opportunity to show our eco credentials.

The summit, named ‘Building a Europe of Excellence: turning knowledge into growth’, included a panel debate on eco-innovation with HP and Shell as well as the European Commissioner for Environment Stavros Dimas.

HP was represented by Bernard Meric, Senior Vice President External Affairs HP EMEA, who presented details of our commitment to using innovation to improve the way in which our own business interacts with the environment. Our Halo Room project, which involves high definition video conferencing technology, cutting down on business travel, was singled out as an example of how businesses can help reduce their ecological footprint.

Designs on the environment

In an age when the need to be environmentally responsible is at the forefront of industry thinking, we have been working hard to ensure that HP is a leading player in Europe.

Klaus Hieronymi is General Manager, Environmental Business Management Organisation, HP EMEA and we caught up with him recently to revisit how HP has taken environmental responsibility through the years and to find out plans for the future. We also put to him: what exactly does happen to end-of-life products when they’re recycled?

HP expands IT capabilities for higher education in EMEA

Higher Education is always prominent in our list of Global Citizenship responsibilities in EMEA. Our ’HP EMEA Technology for Teaching Grants’ initiative supports education professionals in applying mobile technology to learning environments across universities in Europe, Middle East and Africa. In addition, HP organisations in several countries are known for building and maintaining good relationships with local universities where HP has a presence and beyond. One such relationship is that of HP Russia and Tomsk University.

HP promotes launch of UNESCO’s World Heritage Map

UNESCO’s 2006 World Heritage Map was launched in Paris on 22 March, following a partnership between HP, UNESCO World Heritage Centre and National Geographic.

The map, charting 812 World Heritage Sites, is primarily a visual educational tool for UNESCO to raise awareness of the World Heritage Convention.

The partnership for producing the map was formed towards the end of last year and we are proud to be involved in a project that makes extensive use of our high technology printing capabilities.  The World Heritage Centre has combined National Geographic’s cartography with our own high technology printing to illustrate the location of World Heritage sites across the globe.
