Climate change, global warming, greenhouse gases, rising temperatures. All phrases we hear daily as they are discussed by governments, organisations, groups and individuals all over the world.

It would be nice to think that these strong messages of the consequences of climate change would go some way to persuading people to take action. As the Financial Times pointed out in an article on 1 June, it’s not only up to companies to make environmental changes. As individuals, we have our part to play as well.

The Financial Times article highlighted the European Commission’s new Climate Change campaign which was launched in Europe from 29 May to 6 June. The campaign goes to great lengths to explain the many causes of climate change, providing stark evidence of how the world is ‘warming up’. It also highlights some easy steps that we, as individuals, can take if we want to reduce our personal ecological footprints.

Taking control

The European Commission’s Climate Change campaign shows that it doesn’t take much. Just a few small changes in our daily behaviour and actions, can help prevent greenhouse gas emissions and save money. The campaign focuses on ‘Taking Control’, by turning down the heating, switching off appliances, recycling and of course walking instead of driving.

For example, reducing the room temperature by just 1°C can cut 5-10% off a family’s energy bill and avoid up to 300kg of CO2 emissions per household per year.

Raising awareness

To be successful the fight against climate change requires everybody in every nation to make a contribution, which is why the European Commission has launched this latest campaign. Raising awareness of climate change and showing people how they can do their bit to achieve significant reductions in greenhouse gas emissions is the first step.

At HP, we are also making significant efforts to raise awareness and urge people to take action. As you will read in the news section of this online magazine, HP was proud to be the Presenting Sponsor of the recently launched film ‘An Inconvenient Truth’. Featuring former US Vice President Al Gore, the film chronicles the stark effects of global warming. HP’s sponsorship of the film demonstrates our continued commitment to helping our customers make environmentally responsible choices and to reducing our own carbon footprint.

Our ‘Take Action’ video shows that if we don’t take action now, our children will be the ones to suffer the consequences. At HP, we know it’s time to face the future
