As last year, we have published country versions of our annual Global Citizenship report for the UK, France, Germany, Italy and Spain. In addition, most local versions include further information about HP’s Global Citizenship activities in these countries.

2006 Global Citizenship Report

For the interested reader the reports offer further details of specific programmes and initiatives at country level as well as insight into how global objectives are implemented locally. Information includes local activities raising awareness for the recycling of electronic devices in Germany, HP’s ongoing support of Digital Community Centres in the UK and background on the activities of the European Recycling Platform (ERP) and HP’s Hardware Recycling Europe (HRE) facility in France.

All language versions can be downloaded from this website.

Our annual Global Citizenship Report offers us and all interested individuals and groups an opportunity to share our aspirations and discuss our priorities for our Global Citizenship agenda as a company. We find that as a document, it continues to facilitate an open and critical exchange on key issues – a dialogue which we value and draw a great deal of inspiration from.

We’d like to take this opportunity to share some feedback with you that we received last year on HP’s Global Citizenship Report 2005 The feedback comes from an independent survey of 18 stakeholders from Europe, Asia and the United States that included a mix of companies, non-government organisations (NGO) and academics.

Doing well Room for improvement

According to this feedback, we are doing well with the following:

  • Accessibility, breadth and depth: Respondents found the report well written and easy to read and most said the report covered the right issues and provided a useful amount of detail.

  • Goals and performance indicators Respondents said our performance data and goals were useful andadded credibility to the report.

  • Stakeholder engagement
Respondents recognised that HP has asked for and listened to stakeholder feedback, which is demonstrated through quotes and stakeholder comments throughout the report.
Room for improvement remains in the following areas:

  • Business challenges and business case Respondents asked us to be more explicit on how we address challenges to our social and environmental standards through competition from low-cost products and when conducting business in emerging economies with different legal standards.

Respondents also said they would like us to discuss more clearly the business benefits of our global citizenship agenda and how global citizenship is linked to our business strategy.

  • Senior management input
Feedback suggested that the report should include an introduction fromthe CEO or Chairman of the Board to demonstrate more clearly senior management commitment to HP’s Global Citizenship objectives.

  • Stakeholder engagement
Respondents asked us to outline more clearly our stakeholderengagement process.

Please continue to share your comments and thoughts on our Global Citizenship activities and objectives with us.

For the year 2005 HP’s reporting was ranked 21st by the Accountability Rating index, the first global index that evaluates how well the world's 100 largest companies account for their impact on society and the environment. HP was the highest rated company in the computer and electronics industry.

In this issue

In this Global Citizenship Bulletin you can read about a competition around mobile technology and creative approaches to learning. Hosted jointly by the Federal Ministry of Education, the Regional Media Centre of Zollernalb in South West Germany and HP, results demonstrated that mobile technology can play an important part in helping school children develop core skills in creative problem solving and team-based, independent learning.

Another piece of news this month features the prize winner of the HP Responsible Business Award, Estonian company Volli and provides further insight into how HP collaborates with JA-YE (Junior Achievement-Young Enterprise) to encourage responsible and sustainable business practice among young budding entrepreneurs.

In our interview, we talk to Thoko Mogkosi-Mwantembe, HP South Africa’s CEO and one of a few women business leaders in South Africa, as HP South Africa celebrated national Woman’s Day and the 50th anniversary of the women’s march in Pretoria.

And finally, our feature looks at the importance of energy efficiency across our product portfolio, asking what contribution HP can make to the wider industry debate on the issue and highlighting our policy for product design going forward.
