The Community


Kumasi is the capital of the Ashanti Kingdom and hosts the Kwame Nkrumah University of Science and Technology (KNUST) and its eleven different schools/faculties/institutes and colleges

Population of the KNUST community: ~26,000
Population of the Ashanti and Easter Regions of Ghana that will benefit directly for the IT infrastructure at KNUST is about 4 million
Only 5% are over 55 years-old
Approximately 40% are illiterate

The Vision


From the king of the Ashanti kingdom:
"Improve education and create jobs to advance the living standard of people in the Ashanti Region."

From KNUST:
"To be recognised as the premier centre of excellence in Africa for teaching, research and entrepreneurship training in science and technology using IT".

Project & Infrastructure


The University put in place an efficient IT backbone infrastructure which enables the university to serve its existing faculties, the basic schools on the campus as well as act as a hub for Community Technology Centres (CTCs) serving local communities in Kumasi and the Eastern provinces.

Community Services Foundation (CSF) oversees the deployment of the CTC’s, provides training and sustainability models for future expansion.

The main goal is to improve education and help in the creation of jobs to advance the standards of living of the surrounding communities.

Main objectives and targeted population:

to train university students who will then train elementary and secondary school teachers
to provide school children with basic IT knowledge
to train community members for employability
to provide an advanced, sustainable ICT infrastructure to support institutional research and entrepreneurship in the Ashanti Kingdom

The project infrastructure consists of several computer centres among which a fully equipped computer lab in the main library of the University that is serving as a computer resource centre for the KNUST students. It is also used to train the teachers from primary and secondary schools.

In addition, CTCs are operational in KTI-Kumasi, CRIG- Akim Tafo, Lady Leech Library-Kyirapatre, Nkwatia Secondary School, Kwahu Daah-Eastern province.

"As of today, equipment and cash grant with a total value of USD 700,000 consisting of 250 PCs, 23 servers, 40 peripherals and project management fee over 3 years".
