The Community

HP and RI-SOL selected Wahdat because it was a community in need. The town focuses on incorporating refugees into the local community. HP has had a presence in the Middle East since 1968 and is the largest IT company in the Middle East, employing approximately 500 professionals in the region. It opened its first regional offices there in 1994 and has offices in Dubai, Abu Dhabi, Riyadh, Jeddah, and Khobar, Cairo, and Ramallah serving the FCC, the Levant, and Egypt.

The Vision

Here in Jordan, the programme aims to give local communities access to the Internet and ICTs as means to learn, work and benefit from technology. The DCCs will help the economies of the local communities by empowering small businesses and giving them opportunities to develop websites to market their goods.

Project & Infrastructure

HP and Relief International-Schools Online (RI-SOL) launched their first joint initiative for the creation of digital communities in Jordan. A number of digital communities are planned to launch across the country.

The Centre opened on 18 May 2004 at the Wahdat Youth Club. Thirty computers serve the core training and service the community centre. In addition, four schools in the surrounding neighbourhood were provided with 40 additional computers. The first two schools were the governmental Saw's Al Dura and Women Crafts for GirlsSchool, and the other two belong to the United Nations Relief and Workers Agency for Palestinian Refugees in the Near East (UNRWA).

The Youth Club holds courses and workshops in entrepreneurial skills, small business development as well as training and infrastructure to sustain and continue to develop businesses in the future. There are also a number of projects aimed to increase the opportunities of women in the workplace.

Project Partners

In Wahdat, HP partners with Relief International-Schools Online (RI-SOL). RI-SOL aims at bridging the digital divide and the gap from relief to development by providing educational programmes in more than 40 countries, empowering the participants with access to information and communication resources.
